With the Approach of Autumn, Apples Take Center Stage, Says Stern
8/28/2012
HARRISBURG – With the fall season fast approaching, Pennsylvania farm markets are once again offering a wide variety of locally grown apples, everything from Gala and Granny Smith to the lesser known Honeycrisp. State Rep. Jerry Stern (R-Blair) reminds residents that Pennsylvania is the fourth largest apple-producing state and of the 250-plus apple growers across the Commonwealth, two can be found in the 80th Legislative District: Hinish Orchards in Roaring Spring and Bridenbaugh Orchards in Martinsburg.

In an effort to promote the state’s apple growers, the Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Program (PAMP) is kicking off its annual campaign to inform the public about local apple orchards and farm markets.

“We are fortunate to have great produce, such as apples, grown and harvested locally,” said Stern. “I think PAMP’s campaign is a great way to spread the word and encourage more people to take advantage of our local orchards and farm markets as a source for fresh, locally grown food.”

PAMP is making it easier to find local orchards and farm markets through its website at
www.PennsylvaniaApples.org and then clicking on the “Where to Buy PA Apples” link. The mobile site also makes it easy to find markets where you’re on the road.

In addition to information on where to find locally grown apples, PAMP’s website also includes dozens of apple recipes, such as:

Golden Apple Oatmeal

1 cup diced sweet apples
2/3 cup each apple juice and water
¼ tsp. salt (optional)
Dash each ground cinnamon and nutmeg
2/3 cup quick-cooking rolled oats, uncooked

Combine apples, juice, water and seasonings; bring to boil. Stir in rolled oats; cook one minute. Cover and let stand several minutes before serving. Makes two, one-cup servings.

For more information about the hundreds of apple varieties grown in Pennsylvania, the farmers who harvest and sell them, as well as the health benefits derived from apples, check out PAMP’s website at www.PennsylvaniaApples.org.
